Walnut Grove Elementary students are starting a new tradition by collecting more than 5,000 pounds of food for the needy.

During the week of Grizzly Fest, the WGES PTO hosted a canned food drive supporting GraceWorks in Franklin. Each grade level competed with their schoolmates to see who could donate the most cans of non-perishable food by September 23.

Second graders earned the Golden Can trophy for their efforts of bringing in more than 1,000 cans, and many of the students opted to skip recess and help load the truck to be taken to GraceWorks. The donated items from the school will be added to perishable and nonfood items to feed approximately 70 families for two weeks.
