Students at Thompson's Station Elementary are getting into the holiday spirit with their latest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) challenge.

The project began with students drawing Santa and reindeer on film canisters, which they then tried to launch as high as possible using Alka-Seltzer and water. The chemical reaction that was created by mixing the two together caused gas to form in the containers and explode.

"We had to see what measurement makes them launch," said TSES fifth grader Declan Bruecken. "Around four or five actually launched, and some of them hit the ceiling. It was really cool to watch."
