Brentwood Middle Winter Athletics
Winter athletic teams begin practice during during the late fall. The winter athletic seasons runs from approximately December through February.
Students in all grade levels (6th, 7th and 8th) are eligible to participate. There is a boys team and a girls team at each level. There is a 6th grade level, JV level and Varsity level.
All athletes are evaluated based on their ball handling, shooting, defensive skills and basic fundamentals. Coaches look for players who have a grasp of the team concept, have good standing in grades and behavior, and have a good work ethic and positive attitude.
Tryouts typically begin the week students return from Thanksgiving break. Everyone will have the ability to tryout for two days before cuts are made. Those chosen will be asked back for a third day of tryouts. The final team will be selected from this group.

Students in all grade levels (6th, 7th and 8th) are eligible to participate. There is a 6th grade squad and a varsity squad.
Participants are expected to learn floor cheers, sideline cheers, dances and jumps. The squad practices twice a week a month before the season begins. During the season, they practice at least once a week depending on how games are scheduled. The squad also has a short practice before each game. The season begins in December and ends in February.
Tryouts for both the football and basketball cheerleading squads are held each spring. Students learn cheers, dances and jumps for three days and on the fourth day they tryout in front of judges. These tryouts are closed to the public.
Tryout information for 2019 – 2020: BMS Cheer Tryout Packet 19-20
Save the date! Football and basketball cheerleading tryouts for 2019 – 2020 school year will be held on March 4 – 7. A mandatory informational meeting for parents will be February 25 at 6:00 PM in the BMS cafeteria. Detailed information will be provided in the tryout packet that will be available in the offices at BMS, Scales, Lipscomb, and Edmondson on Friday, February 15. Information sheets and physicals are due back to the BMS main office by Monday, March 4. Students will not be allowed to participate in any part of cheerleading tryouts unless Final Forms is up to date and all forms are submitted.

Coaches look for students with dance experience that are prepared to work hard and have fun while doing what they love. The JV and Varsity dance teams will attend a summer camp to learn choreography and refine technique. Practices will be held after school twice a week, starting in the fall and continuing through basketball season. The dance team will perform at the boys’ and girls’ home JV and Varsity basketball games as well as the BMS pep rally. Additionally, the Varsity dance team will compete at a local competition in November.
Tryouts are held each spring for both the JV and Varsity squads. During tryouts, dancers need to demonstrate technical skills such as splits, leaps, turns and extensions, as well as the ability to pick up and perform choreography quickly with great showmanship.
