How long have you been a substitute?

I started substitute teaching when my youngest started kindergarten 4 years ago.

What is your favorite part of being a substitute?

I love seeing my daughters at school. I’m able to give them a quick wave or a hug in the hallway, and it brightens my day. I have also developed such sweet relationships with our amazing Williamson County teachers. It truly is a joy to work alongside them!

What would you say to those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher?

Do it! It may feel intimidating at first, but at the end of the day, children just want to feel seen, known and loved!

Emily, thank you for your dedication and service to Williamson County Schools!

How long have you been a substitute?

I previously was a substitute in the Detroit area before having children and have worked as a substitute in Williamson County Schools since my youngest child started kindergarten, this is my 5th year at Sunset Elementary!

Kara Graves

What is your favorite part of being a substitute?

So many favorites to choose from. I love being able to step in and support the teachers and school staff that have made such an impact on my own children. I love building relationships with the students, being a trusted adult in a child's life is not something I take lightly, watching them grow over the years, reaching goals and successes is an honor. I also love having glimpses of my own children throughout the day and getting to know their friends.

What would you say to those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher?

It is such a great way to support your school, your teachers, and your own children in a tangible way. It is a great way to be on your own children's schedule and yet still be flexible for what else you are balancing in life. As someone wisely told me, you might not be able to work full time in school, you may not be able to write a big check, but you can show up for a child and give that child what they need that day.

Kara, thank you for your dedication and service to Williamson County Schools!
