How long have you been a substitute?
For 5 years.
What is your favorite part of being a substitute?
I typically work at one school which has allowed me the beautiful experience of watching students grow and mature throughout the years. I have personal relationships with literally every child at the school. What an incredible blessing! I've also created friendships with the faculty and staff. These relationships show me again what a wonderful, supportive place a school community can be.
What would you say to those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher?
I would tell those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher to absolutely sign up! Schools are in desperate need of good subs and you will truly make a difference. The flexibility and variety in your schedule makes it a very fulfilling and interesting job. There's never a dull moment!
Joyce, thank you for your dedication and service to Williamson County Schools!
Steve Griffin: October 2025 Substitute of the Month
How long have you been a substitute?
I am starting my third year as a substitute teacher with Williamson County Schools.

What is your favorite part of being a substitute?
What I enjoy most is returning to the same elementary schools where the students welcome me back with smiles, high fives and hugs. Each classroom offers something new to learn, and every group of students bring their own energy and curiosity. Substitute teaching has also given me a front-row seat to how people learn--how patience, encouragement, and structure help students thrive. It's given me a deeper appreciation for what my wife experiences every day as a third-grade teacher and for all the staff who work together to make learning happen. Every time I step into a classroom, I'm reminded that teaching is truly a team effort.
What would you say to those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher?
I'd tell them to give it a try. Substitute teaching reminds you that learning looks the same at every age---whether it's second graders discovering something new or college students wrestling with ideas in my entrepreneurship class. Everyone wants to be understood, challenged, and encouraged. You may only be in a classroom for a day, but in that short time, you can spark curiosity, bring stability, and remind students that someone believes in them. That's what makes it meaningful---you walk in to fill a gap but often leave knowing you've made a difference.
And that's really why we teach ----whether full-time, substitute, elementary or college level. No matter the setting or the age, we all do it for one reason: we teach to make a difference.
Steve, thank you for your dedication and service to Williamson County Schools!
How long have you been a substitute?

I have been subbing for Williamson County School District since the Fall of 2008.
What is your favorite part of being a substitute?
I love being with children, getting them excited about learning, and also being able to help out the teachers. The teachers are the rest of the school staff are always eager to help if needed.
What would you say to those on the fence about becoming a substitute teacher?
Being a substitue teacher is a very rewarding job. Actually, I don't think of it as a job, just a way to live my life to the fullest potential.
