History of BMS

  • Our school opened in August, 1972, with 850 students, and was named Northside Junior High School, with grades 7 – 9. The student population over the next twenty years grew to over 1000. In 1982, the ninth grade became part of the new Brentwood High School, and we became a middle school with grades 7 – 8; later grade six was added. Our enrollment increased to over 900 students. With the opening of two additional middle schools in the northern part of the county, our enrollment averaged 600 students. For the 2002 – 2003 school year, a new addition was added to our building to accommodate an increase of approximately 300 students due to rezoning. For the school year 2021-2022, our enrollment is approximately 1,300 students.

Brentwood Middle School has a serious commitment to addressing the needs of adolescents as they grow through the “middle years”.  A schoolwide implementation of the team concept and interdisciplinary curriculum allows our highly professional staff to educate our students toward realizing their fullest potential and becoming responsible citizens.

Brentwood Middle School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006. During 2011 and 2012, Brentwood Middle School was named the top performing middle school in the Williamson County School district. In 2013, BMS sustained the highest academic growth of any school in Williamson County.  Tennessee named Brentwood Middle a Reward School for Academic Achievement and Progress. During the spring of 2014, Best Schools.org named Brentwood Middle School as one of the top 30 schools in the United States. Brentwood Middle was again named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2016, making it the only school in the Williamson County School district to earn this distinction twice.  In 2020, BMS became the first and currently only, Tennessee school to be named a National PLC Model School (Professional Learning Community).

Late Start Days

  • What is the Purpose of Late Start Days?

Teachers use this time to meet in their curriculum teams by subject and grade level (also known as professional learning communities) to make common assessments. They will also map and schedule the sequence of learning objectives. They will also assess the data to see what kind of extra help or enrichment students need during the Thrive period at BMS.

    Late Start Procedures

    • Buses will run at regular times for students and doors will open at 7:25 AM.
    • 6th graders will report to the cafeteria, and 7th and 8th graders will report to the gymnasium.
    • Students will be able to work on homework or schoolwork until it is time to dismiss to go to homeroom/ 1st period.
    • If parents choose, students do not have to report to school until 8:20AM.
    • Homeroom/1st Period class begins at 8:35 AM.
    • I would caution you to make sure your students are in school before that time and that you give yourself enough time to get to school. Even on late start days, traffic can be an issue.
