Art
The elementary art curriculum is built around essential learning objectives for each grade level. In art class, students will learn to use art tools and materials safely and independently. The students will become confident with a variety of art media and techniques. They will learn basic art vocabulary, including the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students will learn to express their own ideas while producing artwork. They will learn to recognize and use all stages of the creative process. The students will learn about the role of art throughout history and across cultures. Most importantly, they will develop confidence and experience joy through creative expression.
Students receive forty-five minutes of art class a week. All of our art projects are saved over the school year and returned in May in an art portfolio that each student creates. Please look forward to enjoying your student’s beautiful artwork.

Library
The library is open every morning at 8:30 AM for students to checkout books. With teacher permission, students may come to checkout books throughout the day. Kindergarten students are allowed to check out one book, and as they complete their sight word lists, an additional book on their reading level. First and second graders are allowed to check out two books on their reading level. Third through fifth graders are allowed three books, including one fiction and one nonfiction on their reading level, and an additional free choice book. All books are checked out for a two week period. If books are overdue longer than thirty days, student checkout will be restricted until books are returned or renewed.
Library class includes a whole class lesson, story time, technology, and an activity to do individually or with a group incorporating our lesson. Students then have a book selection time where they can checkout books and read quietly.

Music
Students at College Grove enjoy participating in music class once a week for forty-five minutes. Students learn to play instruments, sing, and recognize the beat of music. Each grade level will participate in one musical performance each year where students will showcase all that they have learned in front of an audience.

Physical Education
Physical education is a place where students come to class to have fun, learn new games, and work on improving skills, teamwork, and cooperation. This year, students will have the opportunity to participate in roller skating at College Grove. Every student will be provided with the proper equipment to make it a safe and fun time. We love being able to take the things we do in gym outside for our students to learn and play. This is one of the most important aspects of physical education. Our philosophy is to teach our students to become better people, teammates, and overall well rounded individuals.
“If you had fun, then you won.”
“Fitness is not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be.”
