Art
In the art room, the students experience working with various kinds of media. Students learn about different cultures, artists, art techniques and appreciation. Even though not all students grow up to be artists, we want all students to enjoy looking at art and using their own creativity in whatever they do. Students learn about the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, so students can use these elements and principles while creating art and while observing art. Students learn to self-critique their own art, their peer’s art, and the art of famous artists from around the world. Art is a fun way to experiment with new ideas and use their creativity.

Library
Kindergarten through fifth grade classes visit the library each week for 50 minutes. During that time, students will not only check out new books, but will take part in lessons incorporating grade-level standards and technology. Students will also learn how to use a library to find books they love and information they need.
The library also hosts a fall and a spring book fair each year. This is one of the students' favorite times of the year. If you are interested in volunteering for the book fair or working in the library throughout the year, please contact Mrs. Robinson.

Life Skills
Every other week, students learn about various life skills. Students may focus on friendship skills, study skills, social skills, self-help skills, and testing anxiety. Each class comes to life skills for age appropriate lessons designed to engage the children in development of the following lifelong skills: respect for individual differences, self-esteem, emotional awareness, decision-making and problem-solving skills, study skills, goal-setting, social skills, conflict resolution, personal safety and drug prevention, career awareness, and understanding the career-school connection.

Music
Music is a huge part of our city’s culture and it is a huge part of our school family. Each week, students have the opportunity to sing, dance, play instruments and even compose their very own music. Together they explore music from the past, present and all around the world.
Students in grades 3-5 are welcome to join the HBES choir!
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” -Plato

Physical Education
The mission of the Hunter’s Bend Physical Education program is for students to become lifelong movers who enjoy being active, while succeeding individually and in a team setting. The goal of the program is to offer students the opportunity to explore and experience physical skills and good citizenship through physical activity, which may afford a better quality of life. Students will enjoy a wide variety of activities, such as cooperative games, dance, gymnastics, bowling, basketball, hockey, skating, soccer, volleyball, jump rope, outdoor games, etc.
In fulfilling this mission statement, the program will strive to develop physically educated students as defined by SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) and the Tennessee Department of Education Physical Education Standards.
