Independence High School students observe, question, explain and interpret everyday. We guide students to be active learners who reflect on their growth as they analyze the world.
-
Independence High students have a wide range of program opportunities to participate in before, during, and after the school day. Whether a club, sport, activity, or theater production, there is something for every Indy Eagle.
Planning Guides & Course Offerings

School Scheduling Policies
-
Independence High School follows a schedule which allows students to take six credits and a directed study each year. With teacher/counselor recommendation and course availability, students may take an additional class for a total of seven credits per year.
Students are expected to take the classes for which they have registered. Changes in schedules will be considered only under special circumstances. All students requesting a class change must fill out the Class Change Request Form and obtain the permission of a parent, teachers, a counselor, and an administrator. Students will not be allowed to enter full-year courses at the end of the first semester unless they are making up deficiencies. Students who drop a course after the third week of the semester may receive a zero for that class in that semester.
JROTC
-
Program Overview
The JROTC curriculum, which fully or partially addresses a number of national academic standards – to include Common Core State Standards (CCSS) – includes course work on leadership, civics, geography and global awareness, health, and wellness, language arts, life skills, and U.S. history. The curriculum is based on the principles of performance-based, learner-centered education and promotes development of core abilities: capacity for life-long learning, communication, responsibility for actions and choices, good citizenship, respectful treatment of others, and critical thinking techniques.
More important than “what” is learned in JROTC is “how” it is learned. Every classroom is equipped with leading edge technologies to teach, assess, and report student progress. Teachers are trained to utilize a range of technologies and develop social/emotional skills, support academic content through gaming and simulations, and promote the role of social media. Thus, students engage in meaningful, purposeful activities that lead them to demonstrate success through a portfolio of accomplishments.

Co-Curricular Activities
In addition to a typical JROTC curriculum, Cadets may have the opportunity to participate in a number of co-curricular activities offered by JROTC:
JROTC Leadership Challenge and Academic Bowl (JLAB): a competitive program that imparts values of leadership and citizenship while preparing for higher education milestones like college entrance exams.
STEM Camps: a one week college residential program at STEM labs interacting with college-level professors and graduate and undergraduate students.
JROTC Raider Challenge: A competitive program for JROTC Cadets in five different fitness and skill events.
