The Football cheerleading team at IHS is part of the Athletic department and are included in the school’s membership in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). As per the expectation of the Independence High School Administration, our priorities are to:
- support the football and basketball teams,
- promote school spirit,
- serve as positive role models among peers in our academic performance and behavior in and outside of school and on social media, and
- serve as ambassadors of Independence High School in the greater community.
Cheerleaders at IHS attend camps prior to football season, practice 1-2 times per week, participate in fundraising activities and community appearances. The Football Cheer teams have one game per week.
The Varsity Basketball cheerleading teams are open to rising 10th-12th graders. Tryouts are held in the spring semester for the upcoming school year. At tryouts, candidates will demonstrate sideline skills (cheer, chant, dance) as well as jumps, tumbling and stunt technique.
Cheer Tryouts will be held March 11-13th from 3:00-5:00 pm

Cross Country is both an individual and a team sport, with varsity and junior varsity teams, racing 5k courses over natural terrain. Runners place in cross country meets based on individual performances, and teams are scored based on totaling up the finishing places of the first five runners on the team. The objective as a team is to have the lowest point total.
The Cross Country season begins in August and ends in November. There are also summer practices that are not mandatory, but are highly recommended. During the season (August – November), practices are mandatory and are Monday through Friday, with races on Saturday. Practice times are in the late afternoon, specific times will be announced at the start of the season.
