Independence High School Winter Athletics
Winter athletic teams begin practice during the summer months before school starts in most cases. This athletic seasons runs from early November through the end of February.
If you have any questions regarding Boys Basketball please contact Doug Keil.
During the season, they will practice at least once a week depending on how many games are scheduled. Team members are expected to practice during the off season by participating in conditioning from August – November.
Girls Basketball tryouts were held in May and are scheduled for November for the following school year.
The Basketball cheerleading team at IHS is part of the Athletic department and are included in the school’s membership in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). As per the expectation of the Independence High School Administration, our priorities are to:
- support the basketball teams,
- promote school spirit,
- serve as positive role models among peers in our academic performance and behavior in and outside of school and on social media, and
- serve as ambassadors of Independence High School in the greater community.
Members of the basketball cheer teams also have the option of participating in cheerleading competitions, but this will be done as a separate activity in the upcoming year.
Cheerleaders at IHS attend camps prior to basketball season, practice 1-2 times per week, participate in fundraising activities and community appearances. The Basketball Cheer team has 2 games per week.
The Varsity Basketball cheerleading teams are open to rising 10th-12th graders. Tryouts are held in the spring semester for the upcoming school year. At tryouts, candidates will demonstrate sideline skills (cheer, chant, dance) as well as jumps, tumbling and stunt technique.
