Avoiding the Seasonal Seven

December 18, 2008

Happy Holidays from IN FOCUS!  Winter break is almost here.  The first semester will officially come to an end Friday, December 19.  Students and teachers will enjoy two full weeks of vacation before classes resume Tuesday, January 6.

In the meantime, we have plenty to tell you about in this issue of IN FOCUS.  Parents of seventh and eighth grade students should be on the lookout for a special DVD.  The DVD's were sent home with students this week to help explain the State's new GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.  Plus, what do you get when you combine playground chants and percussion instruments?  The answer is a fun-filled program called PLAYGROUND JAM.  And football season may have come to an end but there's still plenty going on in the world of Williamson County athletics.  High school basketball and wrestling are featured in this week's edition of the WCS SPORTS REPORT.

They may be young, but second grade students at Scales Elementary School are old enough to help out some of the SOLDIERS IN IRAQ.  We'll explain how.  Plus, students at Independence High School volunteer their time and money to collect more than 1,000 TOYS FOR THE NEEDY.  Cross country champion Kathy Kroeger can add a new award to her resume.  Find out what she has to say about winning the HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN.  And a local student will ring in the New Year in southern California.  Find out why he was asked to be part of the 2009 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE.

Some of the other stories you'll find in this issue of IN FOCUS include information regarding the county's STUDENT ASSISTANCE program, and tips to help you avoid the dreaded SEASONAL SEVEN this holiday season.  Be sure and check out the IN FOCUS PHOTO GALLERY, which features snapshots from schools across the district.  Plus, find out which teachers were honored this month with the WC-TV TEACHER FEATURE.  And high schools are already preparing for their spring musicals.  You'll find a list of some of the upcoming performances in our MUSIC/THEATRE section.

As always, be sure and encourage others to SIGN UP for IN FOCUS and don't forget to EMAIL US with any questions or comments you might have.  The next IN FOCUS will come out January 15.
