August 28, 2008

The 2008-2009 school year is rolling right along as we head into the Labor Day weekend.  Kindergarteners began their first full day of school August 25, and the high school football season is now in full swing.  It's safe to say everyone is staying busy as the unofficial start of fall draws near.

This issue of IN FOCUS features three video stories.  First up, see how a unique program called CHALLENGE DAY is affecting students at two Williamson County middle schools.  Plus, take a trip to Greer Stadium where a Longview student received a SPECIAL HONOR for winning an essay contest.  And high school football is finally here.  Check out highlights and scores from the first week of action in the WCS SPORTS REPORT.

Other news this week:  investigators issue a SCAM ALERT involving a false lottery, Williamson County Director of Schools Dr. Rebecca Sharber announces her FUTURE PLANS and Williamson County high schools begin LATE START DAYS.  Plus, the deadline is rapidly approaching for students interested in earning real-world experience through the ACE MENTOR program, and Williamson County Schools wants to hire several workers in the CHILD NUTRITION department.  This issue of IN FOCUS also offers the latest news from the Family Resource Center.  This week, find out how to attend PARENT EDUCATION workshops for free.

As always, IN FOCUS recognizes Williamson County educators and students for their remarkable achievements.  One such teacher is Brentwood High School Band Director Randy Box who was recently featured on the cover of a MAGAZINE.  Plus, find out which Ravenwood educator was named TEACHER OF THE YEAR by a local non-profit organization.  And a student from Sunset Elementary School beat out hundreds of his peers to win a statewide POSTER CONTEST.

Be sure to also check out the MUSIC/THEATRE section, where you'll find information about the upcoming Williamson County Exhibition of Bands and An Evening on Broadway.  This is also a popular time for school fundraisers.  To find out which fundraisers are happening in your neighborhood, just go to our FUNDRAISER section.  And as the school year gets cranking, you'll find more and more snapshots from around the county in our always popular PHOTO GALLERY.

We hope you enjoy what this issue has to offer.  As always, feel free to EMAIL US with any comments or suggestions.  The next IN FOCUS will be out September 11.
