September 11, 2008

We are a month into the 2008-2009 school year and things are off to a fantastic start.  As the official start of autumn approaches, there are a few things parents should keep in mind.  Parent teacher conferences will take place later this month; the first quarter grading period will come to an end in October; and Fall Break is right around the corner.

This issue of IN FOCUS features two video stories.  In the first one, we'll take you inside Kenrose Elementary School and show you how they recognize the first day of kindergarten with an annual event called the BOO HOO BREAKFAST.  The second video features several fantastic finishes in the world of high school football.  Check out some of the highlights from those amazing games in this week's WCS SPORTS REPORT.

As previously mentioned, PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES are coming up soon.  We have advice from the National Education Association on how to make your conference as productive as possible.  Some of the other stories you'll find in this issue of IN FOCUS include information about a new program that helps parents keep track of STUDENT GRADES, a change that will affect when students can take the ACT EXAM and details concerning a series of COMMUNITY INPUT sessions.  Plus, read about several community members who are taking it upon themselves to provide Williamson County students with SCHOOL SUPPLIES.  And find out why three Williamson County graduates will have their art on display at the FRIST CENTER in Nashville.

TEACHER FEATURE is back and it's better than ever.  Find out what this year's educators will receive if selected.  And learn how a new communication tool called SHAREPOINT is helping teachers connect with students.  This issue of IN FOCUS also offers a special message from the Family Resource Center about the importance of PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT when it comes to a child's education.  And for those in need of work, Williamson County Schools has several JOB OPPORTUNITIES available.

It seems every school is in the process of trying to raise money right now.  Visit our FUNDRAISER section for a list of some of the fundraisers happing across the county.  Plus, we have several upcoming performances listed in our MUSIC/THEATRE section, including a concert by Grammy-award winning singer Michael McDonald.  And don't forget to check out our PHOTO GALLERY, which is full of snapshots from schools across the county, as well as the STUDENT ART section.
