Students at Pearre Creek Elementary may feel like they’re sailing the Seven Seas the next time the visit the school library. That’s because librarian Julie Boggess recently transformed the space into a pirate paradise for the school’s annual book fair.
The library, which features palm trees, parrots and pirate ships, even won second place in the Scholastic National Elementary Book Fair Contest. Boggess says her passion for reading plays a big role in her decoration efforts.
“My job as a librarian is to get the kids excited about reading,” said Boggess. “The nicest compliment that parents give me is that I do my job well and that kids get pumped up and excited about reading.”
The book fair has helped the PCES library raise $3,300 so far this year. But Pearre Creek students aren’t the only ones who benefit.
“For every dollar we raise, Scholastic donates one book to Louisiana so that the kids who lost books in the floods at the schools that were devastated will have books on our behalf,” said Boggess.
