You never know what someone else might be going through. That’s the message behind the district’s newest Public Service Announcement (PSA) which features Nolensville High School freshman Ali Shoulders.
After experiencing her own bouts with anxiety and depression, Ali wanted to share her story with other students so they know they’re not alone. That’s when she began working with district leaders to write and develop a script for the PSA.
WCS Counseling Specialist Becky Mitchell says the video is meant to encourage students to treat others with kindness and compassion.
“Everyone is dealing with stress and outside influences that weigh on them and influence their moods and reactions,” said Mitchell. “We all come from different backgrounds and experiences yet our feelings of happiness and hurt, acceptance and rejection, confidence and intimidation are all the same emotions.”
With that in mind, Mitchell says students should always think before they speak.
“You don’t have to be friends with everyone but there’s never an occasion to be mean,” said Mitchell. “Think about what you’re about to say before you say it. Is it going to be helpful or hurtful? How would it make you feel if someone said it to you? If you really can’t say something nice, it’s best not to say anything at all.”
