Preventing the Spread of the Flu

This flu season has seen a particularly aggressive strain of the illness, which means preventing the spread of germs is more important than ever.

“The country is on track to have one of its worst flu seasons in years,” said WCS Health Services Coordinator Tina Hamblen. “Influenza is a contagious airborne viral illness characterized by sudden onset of symptoms. High fever, extreme tiredness, headache, muscle aches, runny nose and dry cough are commonly reported symptoms.”

Hamblen says parents whose children are exhibiting flu symptoms should contact a health care professional. Those children may return to school when they have been symptom free for 24 hours. As always, illness is an excused absence, and parents should familiarize themselves with the WCS Illness Guidelines as well as the Centers for Disease Control’s Flu Guide for Parents.
