The Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) Ready to Be Ready Program gave Fairview Elementary a $42,000 grant to go toward its summer reading camp.

The grant will fund a month-long summer instructional camp for students entering first through third grades. The goal of the camp is to develop students’ overall comprehension and vocabulary skills while simultaneously fostering a love for reading and writing.

“During the camp, students will receive 16 new books,” said WCS Special Projects Manager Erin Caceres. “To expand on what they are reading, they will do hands-on activities, take several field trips and have visits from authors and other special guests.  The camp will also host a Parent Engagement Day where parents and students will create a book together.”

This is the third year the Fairview community will host a summer reading camp. Students will be invited by their teachers to participate in the program.
