The top volunteers of Williamson County Schools were honored April 24 at the 22nd annual Shining Apple Awards ceremony. Honorees in each of the district's 44 schools were recognized for their service to the students of Williamson County. WCS students got an inside look at the state government system as they participated in the annual YMCA Youth in Government Conference on April 12-15. The Tennessee YMCA Youth in Government Program is an annual conference designed to let middle and high school students experience what it's like working in the state government. The two main awards given during the conference are for Outstanding Statesperson and Outstanding Bill, and WCS students brought home several of these honors. Brentwood High School Keeps Latin Alive

Latin is alive at Brentwood High School where students are earning awards for their knowledge of the language. At the Tennessee Junior Classical League's Latin State Convention on April 20-21, Latin students from around the state were invited to test their skills against their peers. The top five students in each category received medals for their efforts. The convention included competitions in categories like Dramatic Latin and a Mythology Spelling Bee, but there was also a chariot race that required students to build a chariot for four pullers and a helmet-wearing rider. Several Ravenwood High students gave award-winning performances at the 2018 Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League (THSSDL) State Championship on April 13-14. THSSDL is an organization meant to act as a voice for speech and drama educators throughout the state. It also tests the skills of students in areas like solo-acting and interpreters' theatre. Grassland Middle Boys Track Team Hits Stride

It's been a long time coming, but the Grassland Middle School boys track team won its first county championship in 30 years. On April 25, the team was crowned the winners of the Williamson Middle Athletics Association Championship after three days of competition. Fourteen boys helped contribute points to the well-earned championship, and seven of them placed in the top three of their categories. The 40th Tennessee Technology Student Association (TSA) Annual State Conference provided the perfect opportunity for students from Fairview Middle, Fairview High and Page High to shine. In addition to the various awards won by WCS students during competitions, two students were elected to the Tennessee TSA State Office.
