2017 Walk Across Williamson Contest

Your child will be receiving a calendar for a challenge called Walk Across Williamson. Every year, all Williamson county schools have a competition to see which school is most physically active.  Not only does this program encourage students and their families to become more active, but schools are also awarded grant money for their physical education department through the Coordinated School Health Program. On the calendar you’ll be receiving, each member of your family can record their active minutes per day during the month of March.  Each member MUST complete a separate calendar. The minutes include walking around your neighborhood, a student having a soccer practice or a game, bike riding around the park, attending a workout class, really anything. At the beginning of April, your homeroom teacher will collect the forms. Now, get out and enjoy this beautiful weather!

Scales always has several teams participate in Destination Imagination.  All students are invited to participate. Teams must have a Team Manager (parent or volunteer).  Destination Imagination (DI) is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization. The purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, they offer seven new standards-based Challenges in STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning, and Early Learning. Each Challenge enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation.  Watch for information on how to sign up and when the informational meeting is in the fall.

For more information, contact Sandy Webster (sandraw1@wcs.edu).

Run Club is offered in the Fall and the Spring. It takes place on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s before school from 7:45-8:15. Any student is welcome to participate. For more information, contact Chad Messmer (chadm@wcs.edu )or Jessica Herrell (jessica.herrell@wcs.edu ).

Here are a few answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Can my child register even though he has not participated before?

Absolutely! Students may join the EWLP any semester. Both Chinese and Spanish classes will incorporate new material while continuously reviewing material from previous classes. As you can imagine, repetition and practice are essential to learning a new language. New students can quickly catch up. Students will build confidence while learning important conversation skills within an exciting environment. EWLP teachers make class fun!

What if my child participated in the past? Will the next class be a repeat of a previous class?

No. Each semester of the EWLP introduces new content while constantly recycling material covered in prior semesters. The EWLP language class will enhance your child’s conversation skills by building on previous levels.

What if I don’t see a class for my child at her school?

We are always looking to add new classes where there is interest. If you don’t see a class for your child, please contact our EWLP Assistant Ruth Gutierrez ruth.gutierrez@wcs.edu to make your preference known. If we can get enough students, we are delighted to do our best to start a class at your school. We want to build language programs in your school!

Is there a discount for the class? What is it and who qualifies for it?

Yes, we do provide a discount for those that qualify. For reduced lunch students there is a 20% fee discount per student and for free lunch students there is a 30% discount per student. If you would like for your child/children to participate, we will need your letter from food services stating approval for free or reduced lunch. Contact us for details.

Fifth graders will have the opportunity to sign up at the beginning of the school year for Flag Raising.  Two students per day are responsible for raising and lowering our flags in the front of the school.  Students will sign up with their teachers and volunteer a few days out of the school year.
